Trust it..and follow it

‘When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.’ (Paulo Coelho P.22) This quote fully express to us that we have to seek something that you want, to be able to achieve. In The Alchemist, Santiago, a young Spanish shepherd boy travels from Andalusia to Egypt to achieve his own goals. During his journey, Santiago meets great supporters who teaches and helps him to seek his own destiny. From his life lessons, he finds his true love, destiny, and personal legends. Santiago undeniably achieved his destiny by being adventurous, knowledgeable and brave.

Santiago’s adventurous spirit helps him to achieve his own destiny and to start his journey. Santiago is born to be adventurous. Santiago and his sheep travel all around Spain region selling their wools. ‘Well, then I’ll be the shepherd.’ (Santiago p.9) It was Santiago’s dream to be a shepherd, who can travel around. Santiago’s parent wanted their son to be a priest. Santiago was educated to be a priest when he was young. Santiago learned Latin, Spanish and theology. However Santiago dreams about the treasure that is hidden beneath The Great Pyramid and decide to give up everything and search for the treasure. ‘The boy felt jealous of the freedom of the wind, and saw that he could have the same freedom. There was nothing to hold him back except himself. The sheep, the merchant’s daughter, and the fields of Andalusia were only steps along the way to his Personal Legend’ (Coelho p.27) Santiago has a family, his flocks and a woman that he likes, the merchant’s daughter. Santiago leaves his family and the merchant’s daughter in Spain and sells all his flocks. With the money, Santiago begins his journey to the Egypt finding his true destiny. Santiago is definitely adventurous to give up his all favor and decides to go to Egypt; Santiago’s intelligence also helps him through his adventure.

Through the journey, Santiago stays intelligent and learns about the hidden life by meeting the great supporters. First, he learns about destiny and the Principle of favorability from the king of Salem, King Melchizedek. Santiago hesitates whether to leave the Spain or not after the dream. However, King Melchizedek encourages Santiago by explaining that when someone decides to follow the destiny the whole world helps him from the beginning which is called Principle of favorability. "When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.” (Paulo Coelho P.22) By meeting Melchizedek, Santiago decides to leave Spain for his own destiny; while Santiago is traveling through the desert he meets the English man who helps him to understand the Soul of the World. The book states, ‘There are only that moment, and the incredible certainty that everything under the sun has been written by one hand only. It is the hand that evokes love, and creates a twin soul for every person in that world. Without such love, one’s dreams would have no meaning.’ (Paulo Coelho p.98) To get close to the Soul of the World, people have to trust something deeply inside to be able to discover something that they want. That is the closet point of the Soul of the World. Destinies, Principle of Favorability, the Soul of the World are the same positive forces that anyone can receives when they stays as intelligence as they can. Santiago understands all the positive forces and knows what he has to work on. Courageous Santiago uses his braveness to step up close to his true destiny.

Brave Santiago is able to cope with the conflicts and troubles that he receives from the adventure. During his journey, Santiago meets the Alchemist who helps him to be brave and fight back to the conflicts. “There is only one way to learn,” the alchemist answered. “It’s through action. Everything you need to know you have learned through your journey” (the Alchemist, p. 125). Santiago and the Alchemist is traveling the Great Pyramid and they meet the military camp. The military catch the alchemist and Santiago because they thought they are the spies. To survive from the military camp, the Alchemist introduces Santiago as an Alchemist and says to the military that Santiago can change himself into wind in three days. “But I have no idea how to turn myself in to the wind.” “If a person is living out his destiny he knows everything he needs to know. There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure.” (The Alchemist and Santiago p.135) The alchemist challenges Santiago and put him into the danger to see Santiago’s braveness. On the third days, Santiago tries to change himself into wind by using all the positive forces that he learnt before. Also, Santiago finds out in the end, that the treasures are not at the Great Pyramid. It’s right under the spot where he dreamt about the treasure. He goes all the way back to the Spain without giving up and he finds the treasure lastly. Santiago was brave enough to start the journey, go through the journey and to finish up the adventure.

Santiago is indisputably adventurous, knowledgeable and brave to finds his own destiny. It might have been a challenging journey; however it was Santiago’s choice. It was possible for Santiago with his own spirits to leave Spain and go to Egypt, also to come back all the way back to Spain. Santiago was following his destiny. Following the chosen destiny is the most comfortable way for people to live. It’s chosen life for people who understands the world.
